Intellectual Property under the era of Web 2.0

Web 2.0 not only brings new network and life experience for us; but also brings a new problem for the protection of intellectual property rights.

In short years, Web 2.0 has not only become a significant web service platform; it more becomes a lifestyle embedded in our daily life. Blog, broadcast, P2P, Google, eBay, Facebook, MySpace...... Under the direction of core concepts between "share" and "interaction." The concepts generated by human interaction has created a closer and knowledge-based society structure in the Internet space. At the meanwhile, web 2.0 which brought by the advanced of technologies and comprehensive renovation also has faced the unprecedented challenge.

Because of the available platform provided by Web 2.0, the violation of intellectual property rights may be more frequent than ever before. Due to many of its participants, the number of potential infringers increasing in geometric progression and its distribution is more dispersed; those prenomen increased the cost of verification and accountability.

With the broad information dissemination and influence ability of Web 2.0, the scope and extent of infringement of intellectual property can not compare with earlier made before.

Based on the study of intellectual property which appeared in the Web 2.0 era; I think a possible approach to solving the conflict is to balance the interest of the right holder and the public, eventually make the intellectual property to maximize the advantages to the utility of society.

  1. It would be a great movement! Unfortunately, when it comes to "data" of the user, it may already be siding with businesses rather than the citizens :(. I talked about it a little on my blog, but countries like Japan side with companies when it comes to obtaining private data of citizens if they take the time to collect the data, and it is "valuable" in nature. As a citizen, to protect "data" that is personal, it pretty much means stay as unconnected as possible.

Though when it comes to IP sharing of creative content, yes there needs to be discussions on that, especially when it comes to DMCA postings via steam or youtube (I highly recommend to check out the Alex Mauer case going on right now with streamers and Alex Mauer, there are some good youtube vids on it!)
